The tell is simple: put your palm flat on the inside of the panel on a hot afternoon. If it's warm enough to notice, the door isn't stopping much. Weatherstripping dries out and cracks around the same age, so even a door with some insulation may be leaking around the edges anyway.
The mistake we see most is people replacing the opener or fixing a spring and assuming that solves the heat problem, because that's the part that broke. The opener and the spring have nothing to do with how much heat the panel itself lets through. A brand-new opener on a 1985 uninsulated slab door still bakes the garage the same as before.
The other common mistake is weatherstripping alone. New seals help with drafts and dust, but they don't touch the core problem on an original panel from this era - there's no insulating layer inside to stop conducted heat, only a stop-gap around the edges. If the garage backs onto a bedroom or a laundry room, sealing the perimeter without addressing the panel itself leaves the main heat path untouched.

Steel expands with heat, and decades of that cycling on an older panel can produce a slight warp that only shows up when the metal is hot. It usually means the door is old enough to be reaching the end of its flat life, not that the track or opener is failing.
